Protect personal information

Avoid sharing sensitive information early in a relationship, including:

• home address;
• banking information;
• passwords or authentication codes;
• Social Security numbers;
• passport or identity documents;
• information that could be used to access your financial or online accounts.

Meeting in person

• Meet in a populated public place for the first meetings.
• Tell a trusted friend or family member where you are going.
• Arrange your own transportation.
• Keep your phone charged and accessible.
• Leave immediately if you feel unsafe.

Romance-scam warning signs

Be cautious when someone:

• quickly claims unusually strong romantic feelings;
• repeatedly avoids video calls or in-person meetings;
• claims to be overseas, deployed, or traveling whenever meeting is discussed;
• asks for emergency, medical, legal, or travel money;
• asks you to invest in cryptocurrency, stocks, trading platforms, or other opportunities;
• pressures you to keep your relationship or financial activity secret.
